Am I the right coach for you?

Each athlete has their own unique needs and desires. I have seen a lot of coaching philosophies in my travels over the net while looking for information myself and the one thing that I realized was that most of those philosophies are really their own. They are the things that they use to motivate the coaches. Chances are, these are not the same things that motivate you to get to the finish line. The goal as the coach is to work with the athlete to find out what they want. Do you just want to finish or do you want to place top you’re your age group? There are a lot of questions that help a coach make up a profile for an athlete but they are key to making the experience for the athlete that much better. These are the kinds of things that I would want to know about when we talked:

  • What are your goals? Finish a marathon? Run a 3:10 marathon to qualify for another race?
  • How much time per week can you train?
  • How many hours have you trained in the past? How many hours can you train at a max level. Minimum number of hours?
  • What are your weaknesses? Swim/Bike/Run/Other?
  • How serious are you about the goal? Is this a first timer situation where you want to get to the finish line or is this a case where you want to work to improve your time from last year.

What are the benefits of having a coach?

I get this question the most when people call or email me about getting a coach so here are a couple of the big reasons for getting a coach.

  • Help you get the most out of the time you have to prepare.
  • Make sure that you avoid the major missteps in training.
  • Be a good source of information on proper training technique.
  • Help you get the information you need when you need it.

If you are an athlete that does not work and has all of the time in the world to train and focus your efforts on winning then I am not the coach for you but I can point you in the right direction. Email me and I can recommend a few people to talk to. If you have a job, maybe a couple of kids and a desire to get in the ring and go a few rounds with the endurance gods as well as your own mind and body, then give me a call. We can talk about what your goals are and whether hiring a coach is the right thing for you. I’m not a salesman, just a guy looking to get someone else hooked on the endurance drug and pass on good information to people looking for it. If you want to, you can read more about my coaching approach. or the coaching options that I offer.
